The 2023 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

Heading back to the swamp with a few buckets of seedlings to plant.

Some parts of the swamp are now dry enough to walk with regular shoes.

PS: Last year I had planned on collecting the big tree in this picture only to find out it has a 36” diameter base.

That just means you find a friend with an engine hoist. You could totally get a small truck in there right now.
Collection is easy. I have a track hoe at my disposal. Keeping it is difficult with a 4-5 ft diameter pot required. How am I going to move it to PA?

The last batch of BC seedlings are scheduled to be planted this weekend. This time they are being planted on islands near the surface of a lake. We will be using boats to plant them. I am glad to reclaim some space in my crowded backyard. Those 55 gal drum cut off pots took a lot of space.

Wait when are you moving to PA??

I've been wondering the same thing. I'm planning to go to the MABS show this spring. Maybe I'll run into internet people there, assuming you're not all bots.
Oh I’m a fecken bot , bot….. It will be cool to put faces to names come nationals .. so stoked

Have fun. I thought about going, but I have a lot going on in September this year, so I figured for now I'd plan to go to the regional show in spring.

That should be cool , some how I’m in 2 clubs that represent that show? even though I’ve only been to one club meeting that wasn’t at the Kifu studio.

No new trees came home today, but I did take a hike out in the sticks. Thought I'd share the view and a fun friend that popped up as Juju and I were heading toward home.

And a roadrunner that seemed to think we were the least interesting thing on the mesa.

I did find a rather built-up clump I may go back for when the season is closer. Still working on a positive ID.

Had an opportunity to collect a BC in east Texas, and wanted to be able to collect one where I could keep all the foliage (which had to be a small one). Came across this guy that was covered in green briar, and hidden away in a spot quite away from the nearby water. Didn’t get much fine roots but hoping for the best.

Bonus pic of a BC with a knee in between it’s trunk, have never seen anything like that…

Also came across these two BC I can potentially collect in February, was curious about anyone’s thoughts for bonsai potential?

One is pretty much a log that seemed to be cut a long time ago, has somewhat new growth.

The other is growing on the side of a little embankment and is growing pretty well.
