Hello there,

I only have one bonsai (left), a schefflera arboricola. It's growing nicely, with new shoots appearing every week. After a few months just letting it grow and accustomed to my home's environment, I cut some branches and leaves.

I am just not sure how to style that tree because of the very specific way the leaves grow - one leaf has multiple little leaves. I want to grow long branches but the shoots go in any directions.

Just like with other trees, how can I keep a branch to grow in one direction (in addition to using wires)? I just don't get the leaf pattern.

Thanks for your help!

Vincent

I have a few of these I am just starting and learning on. There isn't a whole lot of information out there about these plants because many do not consider them to be bonsai. BUT they are great and almost indestructible plants and really the only plant that can survive inside a house with out any problems. Although they do much better outside when the weather is warm enough for them. Now that the nights here are staying above 50 degrees (had on night in the 40's) I moved them along with the rest of my tropicals outside and they are all doing much better with strong new growth.
Here is a link. Hope it help you with what you are trying to do. http://www.bonsaihunk.8m.com/info/ScheffleraBonsai.html

Look up fuku bonsai on the web. Great training ideas for schefflera. You can learn a lot from their site. Good luck.

That link is great, thank you so much for sharing! That will certainly help me to style my Umbrella tree. It is indeed almost indestructible lol.
