I recently tore out a cotoneaster hedge in my yard. I kept two stumps that had some girth and movement to them. I think I just wanted to join the “trying to turn old hedge stumps int bonsai” club. Anyone have any relevant experience with the species?
These are from May 7th.
When I get some buds I like on the straight top sections, I’ll be shortening them further. I’ll also thin out other shoots after they have had a few more weeks to grow.
These seem to be growing quite vigorously right now. I’ll do some branch selection this fall after leaf drop, wiring next spring. Eventually some carving is going to happen as well. Comments?
Update on the first one: I'm happy with how it's coming for just a couple years:
I'm letting the branches extend for awhile to thicken, but have wired some movement into the twigs.
the berries will turn black and stay on all winter
