@rockm voiced some concern in the Elms forum about price on a tree and mentioned "stringy Nebari."

Got me looking at my oak and wondering. Knowing oaks don't like root deprivation........

Would like suggestions on the oak I have.

Here's pix:

ON1.jpg

Circling root.

ON2.jpg

Runaway root.

Whole tree:

I don't much care for that circling root in 1st pic. ???????

Unsure about the one outside the main trunk in pic 2. Okay or chop?

Whole tree pic (3) is just to give idea of size of tree.

Any suggestions? Pic 1 ..... chop now and seal? Or?????

Or..... leave it all alone and take a nap?

Oaks do not like wholesale root removal but any tree can cope with losing a few % of the total roots. Your oak appears to have plenty of other strong roots. If you are reasonably confident that the remaining roots are all healthy and active there will be no problem removing 1 or 2 roots any time of year.
I would definitely remove the circling root and probably take off the protruding part of the other one too. You could probably do both at the same time but if that makes you nervous, cut 1 now and do the other in 6 months or so.
