Lovely shohin trees Judy! Nice pics and pots as well!

Adair, where do you get this info from? Got any book tips (not in Japanese)?
thank you! I wish I could find some decent books on this subject! The trees, not just display.

Morten Albek has a nice book on shohin trees, and I ordered a Japanese translated one a while back, but it was out of stock... I'll try to find title and writer!
The book was put out by Stone Lantern, and is out of print. They are far too expensive now for me... Wish I could find one of those, it's on the top of my list.

I am extremely fortunate to know Daisaku Nomoto. He was (and still is!) Boon’s Senior, even though he is a good bit younger than Boon. Daisaku has won the Kokofu Prize in Japan. Plus he is a Vice President, and I think in the Board of Directirs of the Nippon Shohin Association.

Daisaku usually comes to visit Boon in January each year, just before the BIB show. He helps BIB members prepare their trees for showing, as well as assists in the set up of the actual displays. One of the things he does on Friday night after we have set up the show, is to go over to the Shohin display and “explain” why the various trees were chosen to be included, and he points out the best and worst... er... let’s say he discusses how the display could be improved!

One year, he handed out a picture of his Kokofu winning display, and pointed out the features of why it was the winner that year. He’s always entertaining, as he speaks broken English, and he scrunches up has face as he tries to remember the words he wants to use! Boon and Jonas Duiprich usually assist with the translation.

I’ve been pleased to see that he has been a featured artist at many conventions recently. He is very talented, and fun to be around. I’ve learned a lot of wiring techniques looking over his shoulder as he wires. His specialty is JWP. If you ever have the opportunity to see him in action, be sure to see him!

Adair is right this time;)
And if you have the opportunity to take a workshop with Daisaku or have him work with you, do so. He is a very skilled teacher and awesome to work with one on one. He has a great sense of humour and always adds in additional information , extra tips while he works. Boon himself includes a lot of the information in his handouts throughout the intensive program as well as the focus, is on Show Preparation in the Winter Four program prior to the BIB show as Adair mentioned. usually near the end of January each year.

I have a second copy Judy, not sure what it would cost to mail? The cover is a bit marked up as the picture shows. Is this the one you are looking for? If so let me know.

This time?

I guess even a stopped clock is right twice a day! Lol!!!

I’ve told this before, but it always makes me chuckle when I think about it: when you ask Daisaku anything about Shohin, he’ll say, “Shohin? Shohin, there are no rules! <pregnant pause>. But...” and he’ll go on for a half hour explaining all the rules! Or at least some of them!

I like the way he lowers his voice before he imparts one of his tips! Like how to manipulate the needles to encourage a back bud in a particular location on a JBP. it only works when i have fresh batteries in my hearing aids:)

Ooohhh! I don’t know that one!

On Two needle pine. Choose a pair of needles in the location you would like a bud. Gently separate the needles to slightly tear the needle sheath without breaking away the needles. Evidently this causes the tree to send energy to the site for repair and often triggers the adventitious bud at the base of the needles. Best to time with decandling.

Cool!

YES!!! This is indeed the book. I will PM you and we can work out what you want for it. Thank you sooooo much.

Thanks all! No idea if Daisaku does stuff in Europe, but I'll try to see him someday!

@AdairM, if you see him someday, could you please ask him if he knows any good (English) books on the subject? There must be some out there...
Morten's book is quite good, but it lacks high quality shohin display chapters.

Daisaku was recently in Europe. Sorry you missed him.
