If anyone has read my latest post you would know I just got a big ficus b tree that my plans are to airlayer off many trees trunk chop and then make a sumo banyan from the leftovers
Those are my plans. My question is the soil it's in and the roots it has. The soil looks to be dark mushroom soil with maybe 18%-25% sand mixed in. Ficus given root room are very very vigorous. But th pot is completely filled and hard as a rock with its roots. Water it and it looks as if the water sits on top of the soil and only seeps down along the pot.
Obviously I want to repot but I don't want to root prune (much if at all) because I don't want to slow down the work needed to be done. So I'm considering pulling it from its pot roughing up the outside roots wash out what I can put it in its new pot and fill with good soil. I just want to give its roots some breathing room while I do work to it.
If I'm going to slip it can I use a 50/50 potting soils/perlite mixture? The pot it's in now is 10gallons the pot it will be going in is 15 gallons. So I feel to buy and sift my normal soil would be a huge waste since I only plan on keeping it the new pot for as long as it takes to do the work needed (at the most 6 months).
What is your thoughts?
Thanks in advance
Kevin
