In Longwood Gardens anyway. That is actually where my Spring starts every year. The nectarines bloom in the glass house. After that the trident maple bonsai leafs out, also in glass protection.Next will be the Chinese elm.So, despite the power outages,my home included, and falling trees everywhere,The Longwood conservatory was open at 12:00 PM and I drove the ten minutes to get an early dose of Spring.Beats the alternative in the last photo taken outside.

always nice to see signs that fly in the face of what the ground hog predicts.....:)

here in the home of the world champion football seahawks, mother nature has no respect, we're in single didgits for temperatures. My chojubai quince are in bloom, least the red versions.
Up at the Pacfic Rim Bonsai gardens, the Ume and some pink plums are in blossum. Last volunteer work I did was removing leaves from a japanese beech on display.

Officially speaking spring comes in 42 days :)

Sounds like a great volunteer opportunity you have there.Hey,I just count the weeks till' March and it does not seem so long.I am at 3 weeks and two days.I am headed to Longwood Gardens again today.I was practically the only visitor there yesterday at the start.

You are very lucky to live so close to Longwood. We do go there a couple of times a year during "much better" weather because it is a 45 to 60 minute drive as is and you know how "good" PENDOT is at road work :P I am guessing you were missed by the Ice Storm or?

We were completely hit by the ice storm.I was getting very bored sitting around a powerless house,so I went to Longwood yesterday. They let people in for free since the only thing available was the conservatory. They made paths away from all trees so no one would get hurt.I was very surprised, but thankful they were open.Same thing today too.My power came on last night though.Still quite a lot of power out around here though.

We were blessed with only 10 hours outage yesterday in daylight hours, heated the place with out camping heater. As you say though while typing this there are over 400,000 with no electric :( Did you get any pictures today?

Yes you did! Sunday was 50f, Monday was 10 to 12 inches of snow and over 32f. Some of it melted Tuesday followed by an overnight storm that resulted in 1/2 inch of ice. Then power out etc. Kind of reminded me of living in New York :p

The ice was brutal throughout Chester County and surrounding counties too.Woke up to no power and just the sound of creaking trees and crashing to the ground.

Sadly this very old JWP in front of my Wifes Office did not hold up *sigh*. The cleanup is sad honest.

I almost didn't post that it had been in the high 70s this week in Jville Fl for fear that your northerners might come looking for me with guns loaded, but then I realized you will be snowed in for at least another month! Dogwoods and redbuds are blooming down here.

Conflicting signs up here. We just got a fresh new 13" of snow and it's still stinkin' cold (10 deg with full sun as I write this). On the other hand, I am noticing that snow is melting on the roads faster now due to the strengthening sun. So I guess that's something!

All right finally some warmth headed this way

Really looking forward to Wednesday with the warm up.Finally I can open the deep cold frames and inspect the trees.I never open the lids in the freeze because it rips all the foam insulation that makes it a tight fit.Gonna' spritz some with a bit of water and probably snip off the ties forming my small broom shape trees.Gotta' see what is going on in there. What a frozen winter this season.Really had to go on faith and past experience with the state of the trees in this protection. They stay in a moist state for quite a long time in there. The bottom is earth with a couple inches of gravel. There is usually dew on the bottom of the pots and sometimes a bit of frost on the tops of the bigger pots. There is always frost on the inside top of the box and down in the frost line depth inside and it keeps the humidity nice inside.I really hope my Japanese Ojishi maple air layers made it.I am remaining optimistic cause' they were pushing new roots in the autumn.
