Our Japan trip started in Tokyo and so we went looking for a non-Omiya Bonsai garden to tour on a Thursday. Shunkaen Bonsai Museum is the garden of Kunio Kobayashi in the Edokawa-ku prefecture on the East Side of Tokyo. From Shinjuku we took two trains and a bus to get there. A fairly easy trip. There is no need to make a reservation ahead of time, just walk up, pay 1000¥ per person during the hours they're open and wait for an apprentice to start a tour. A tech savvy older gentleman armed with Google translate was telling us which trees are worth 1,000,000¥

The young apprentice tells us about the bark of this Japanese black pine that is set in the middle of the garden.

The specialty of this museum are the displays. They switch these trees out of the formal displays every two days. I didn't take a photo of all of them but each one was amazing.

The bullet train is going though a lot of tunnels so it's hard to upload more photos right now. I'll make another post when we get to our next hotel.

What a great opportunity, thanks for sharing.

Do they sell pots?

Look at the leaf reduction on this trident! I love a trident with teeny tiny leaves

Nice pics! Went to Japan back in April but due to my wife being pregnant (and easily bothered moving around all day) we agreed we only visit the Omiya village. I guess I'll visit Shunkaen next time, whenever that is ....🥲

The whole space was beautiful. From the deadwood to the bamboo sifting screens to the piles and piles of pots
