Looking for large pre bonsai shimpaku stock. Would like to keep it under a $1000 but could go higher for the right material.

Define large.

Being an owner (by marriage... LOL) of several large-ish junipers from Telperion... I highly recommend them.

Define Large

Sorry, now that I read my post I can see that it is a bit vague. I think I would classify large as anything with a trunk diameter of 2.5” or greater. Additionally, I would want something that has been grown with bonsai in mind. This does not mean that I would not consider something smaller just that I wanted something that would be in the medium to large scale when done. I have a few smaller Shimpakus (Height: 8”-12”; Trunk: 1.5”) and could always add another but was looking for something bigger on this project. I attached a picture that was recently posted on this forum under junipers “Shimpaku from evergreen gardenworks”. I recognize this as a rare piece of material but if you only try to swing for a single it’s really hard to hit a homerun.

Thanks, Brian

Good luck...it took me a LOT of effort to find that one. What I learned in that search is there is a pretty big void in shimpaku stock between the $500 and $2000 range. Most material I found was domestically grown up to the $500 range, or imported material starting in the $2k range; and usually not good imported material. Good imports seem to start in the $6k range. No doubt, others will weigh in with their experiences, but that is what I learned in my 3-month search for the shimpaku you attached above.

These are the guys I contacted in my search who had material closest to what I was looking for: Brent Walston at Evergreen (the source of this one), Chris Kirk at Telperion, and Don Blackmond at Gregory Beach. Don had one about that size for a long time on his website...don't see it there now. Both Brent and Chris had good stuff in the $500 range, but it was considerably smaller. Plant City did not have anything close when I was there in December.

Best of luck on your search...hope to see a photo on a thread sometime soon!

Sapman,
I'll get some pictures and measurements for you.
I suspect the cost of shipping the tree from OR to FL will make it unreasonable, but it's still fun to show off.
Stay tuned,
Chris
