Am about to repot my lil Shimpaku, dot really wanna put it in ground, but i do have big pots.....

I would pot it up to no larger than a 1 gallon pot for now. It will be able to stay in that a few years then up to a 3 gallon and so on and so forth.
 
With such a small root system now, and a young tree, you have an excellent opportunity to keep the rootball how you want it.....

I'd be looking into something no deeper than your final pot. And wide enough to spread the current roots out in.

It's like raising kids....do it right now.
So you don't have to send em to rehab later!

Just don't put it in a deeper pot to swirl around in, and grow down into.

I'd say throw it in a colander.......
And by colander I would mean a purpose shaped basket!

But Adair hits the cellar on the weekend, I dont want to get him riled up!

He only thinks colanders are for pines.
He should ease up on the cellar.
