Shimpaku Juniper Penjing...

I like it. If it was mine, I might try to use 2 taller rocks with a small gap between to make it look like your little creek is flowing through a steep canyon. Something like this - one of my favorite spots on earth:

Nice little scene! I do find the pot to be a little too colorful/bright for my eye. I definitely enjoy it though, thanks for sharing.

You've been busy haven't you lol! I like this little scene too.
Seeing through is very important to me, the big rock stops your view, hence your imagination can't go into the 'beyond the rock' part of the scene. The pic VA shared shows a good perspective of water to rock ratio. Your water is a bit overdone. Looking at all things in relation to each other. Size of forest, size of rock, your little stream, well, the smaller the stream the bigger the trees will appear,
Thanks for sharing your work. I hope you are not offended by my picking at the details. It's the details that makes the whole thing pop.

Hello, I disagree that the water is too much or too wide a stream...its just right and looks more in relation when viewed in person....
Yes I specialize in Landscapes, Saikei and Penjing... I have 2 others in progress.
I appreciate your critiques on both the Japanese Maple and this Shimpaku Juniper.
Absolutely no offense taken on either & thank you for your commentary, I take all into consideration for improvement.
Both of these Landscapes are doing well and in need of Pruning, Triming at present....
I plan on entering both in a local Bonsai exhibition in August, I'll let you know how things turn out...
I hope you find the time and creativity to do more with your Japanese Maple Landscape, those beautiful Maples need to be Re-Arranged in order to increase viewer appreciation.
*Note: The big rock in the Shimpaku setting is showing the Stream coming from beneath the rock as in Lew Bullers setting which inspired this setting, not being a copy cat but close....
In Bonsai Landscape's, if 10 people view the setting there will be 10 varying opinions on it...

2 additional views of my "Boy Fishing" Shimpaku Landscape.

Bonsai exhibition in August,
Down there in Rochester Hills?
At Bordines?
We're going to have some fun Bolero!
I get to find out your real name.
I get to tear into that procumbens @Adair M gave me last year that's at Vances.
I told him if he wants to he can do a demonstration with it.
Plus I'm bring a large shimpaku to work on.
And that Tamarack group I'm bringing for you.
If I read the newsletters correctly Walter Pall might be there in October to do a workshop!
I'll be there for that even if I have to break someone's leg to earn money for the tree and education.

Hi Mike, I will be exhibiting August 26th & 27th at UM Matthei Botanical Gardens, home of the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society.
I will also try make Bordines Four Seasons Bonsai Show, I need those American Larch Tamarack that you have for me...
I want to add them to this 4 year old setting...Do you think they will fit in ??? These pictures were shot a month ago b4 full foliage...Tray is 18" x 13" x 2 1/2", Larch reach up to 21"...
I would like to crowd another 4 or 5 good sized Larch into this setting.

PS: I would love to see Vance help you style your Shimpaku and then tear into your Procumbens...

Do you think they will fit in ??
I'm not even sure you will be able to separate them. They've been in the colander for a couple years.
But they are in great shape.
They're even starting to bark up.
Hey @M.Frary wasn't there a possible wrestling match talked about for you two?:D Vance can referee!
I don't think Bolero wants any of this.

I don't think Bolero wants any of this.

My wrestling days have been over for many, many years, the closest I get to a fight is over who pays for the dinner and drinks....and it's called an argument.

I haven't been in a scuffle in a couple years either.
I might have to drum one up.

Thanks Bolero, I need all the encouragement I can get. I make no defense for the lack of productivity, but to say that I went into it, feeble and weak representations at best. I knew my trees were not really up to snuff so I put myself to the task of first creating suitable trees and shrubs to be used. Once you plant the trees in the landscape they won't 'grow into it '. They have to fit in when you put the whole thing together. That's just where my head is at with the building of the composition. Hence I have laid off on the building and am growing a several dozen trees for the sole purpose of using them in future landscape works.
The only thing I know for certain is that when you take a pic it just looks terrible compared to seeing the actual piece. I hate to even comment on a pic of a forest planting and did so with some trepidation, knowing how my own work appears all flattened out like that.
