It didn't do this last year, but I repotted it into this pond basket last March so that may have suppressed them. They appear to be coming in most thick on the underside of the foliage. Should I remove them or just let them do their thing?

Goal for the plant right now is just letting it grow and thicken. The lower branches have been wired and twisted, while I'm letting the larger, straight branches take off as sacrifices.

I was only told this was a "shimpaku" when I was given it by a generous club member last year, and it sure looks like kishu. Then again, I don't have enough experience to really know on sight.

Wire those sacrifice whips out and air layer them in a year or two! My shimpaku gets berriea similar. I honestly just ignore them...
