Seedling Identification - Gumbo Limbo?

Anyone know if this is a gumbo limbo seedling? I cant find any pictures online, I've been searching for two days. All I found is that image attached of what it should look like, I guess. I find them in the parking lot of Home Depot of all places. Lots of gumbo limbos, Jamaican dogwoods and sea grape bushes. I don't find them directly under the gumbo limbos though. I guess it could be a weed....lol. I'm not sure if I should post this in this section or the propagation section. Hopefully someone will know.. Thanks!

As it grows it will be easier to identify. Update this thread in a month or three and someone from your neck of the states will probably have an idea

Well, it probably cant but pretty cool to grow ... I cant bonsai any of my seedlings until like 2022 so .. LOL...

Actually Paul,

we tested the Tourist Tree, and it grows rapidly.
BUT branching is poor.
Might make a good visual oddity, but not really a Bonsai.

Tried the Tamarind ?
A lot of enjoyment.

I've been experimenting with cutting of Gumbo Limbos. I got one to pop a few buds, very excited. It might suck as a bonsai but pretty cool to have a "miniature" gumbo limbo. I just happened upon these seedlings. I thought it was really cool because I never see flowers on the gumbo limbos let alone seeds but I've only recently got into growing trees so maybe I just never noticed. I would love to try a tamarind. I have about 10 mimosas growing.. Aren't they similar?

I keep trying to buy tamarind seeds from Treeseeds.com but always out of stock. Ill get them as soon as they are available.


as far as JBP, I already have a bunch in the ground. About 35 sprouted but lost half to damp off. I just planted 75 more. LOL. I tried all different kinds of soil. I still have 125 seeds left in my bag!
I tried something different with the new seeds that I have planted. Potting mix on the bottom and a big layer of bonsai soil on top. @choppychoppy had great success doing that so I'm following his advice.

Anthony, a question, is it totally necessary to root prune the JBP? I dont know if I have enough pots to start these little cuttings! LOL.

they develop naturally.
However, most folk want a now situation.

Part of the growing by seed programme involves
bare rooting about 3 years down the road.

If you need the article, offer an exchange to Gustavo,
or Clicio.
I believe they have it on PDF.
That way you can work with information.

I just found these online, finally: Leaf pattern is very similar if not exact but its not red like the seedlings in my picture.

I have Bursera fagaroides, the Mexican copal bush. Related to Gumbo Limbo. I think they are interesting botanical oddities, can be raised as bonsai, but like adenia,. Portulacaria, and other pachycauls, they will never be "classic" bonsai. They'll always have zones of reverse taper and other issues.

I love the fragrance of the sap, anytime you bruise a leaf or cut a stem.

Exactly what I was talking about. Not a "classical bonsai" but pretty attractive. I'd be happy to have one like that.
