So, trying to save money, I bought rubber mulch by accident. Question is, do you guys think that will work for insulating the Juniper I have or do I need to go ahead and spend the extra money and get some regular mulch?

Rubber mulch is cheaper than wood? I figured shredded tires would be worth more. Who knew? I've never even seen it for sale but have seen it on playgrounds.

Guess I got lucky then. I was walking through Lowes and was looking for a small bag. Found the small bag for a good price and Whoop it was tire Mulch. :p

I was just wondering is all. I've never used it. I use straw and or leaf litter. Rubber should work for insulation just fine. And it's reusable.

I don't know how is Falls in VA but here in IL I have half a ton of dead leafs that I have to sweep/blow away every week-end in my yard.
I just use that to make a comfy cocoon around my pots...
And of course it's free... :)

Some rubbers leach chemicals, I would avoid it. I paid $7 for a bag of pine bark mulch recently, so it's definitely cheap enough that I would not want to take an avoidable risk.

I see rubber mulch most commonly purposed for use on playgrounds.

Playgrounds that my children play in.

Along with the leached chemicals!

Either the epa missed something. Or you should be fine.

Goomba just loves wood! Nice work by the way!

I used it once and all my trees turned into tropicals.

I've seen a lot of news lately suggesting that those ground up tires are pretty serious carcinogens. I avoid ground up rubber at all costs.

I had this conversation with a homeowner a few years ago who was having his rubber mulch removed as he feared toxins. His trees and bushes were all healthy but he read a report about carcinogens being released from ground up rubber and its ability to kill plant life. My comment to him was " With the billions of pounds of rubber ground off tires on every roadway in the world as cars drive over them every day how does any thing, plant or animal, live near roadways."
