So I picked up a tree during a workshop and it’s supposed to be an American Beech according to the organizer and instructor.
It was halfway through it's initial spring flush when we styled and pruned the strong growth so I didn't really make much of the fact that the leaves were small and didn't seem like what I understood to be Beech or Hornbeam foliage size/shape.
However, the second major flush of growth still has tiny leaves that don’t really look like beech leaves and I am now questioning the actual species I have. The leaves are too small, the shape of the buds are not long and pointy like Beech. and the leaves do not emerged folded in the tell-tale accordion configuration I'm used to seeing with Beech.

Could this be a variety of Elm (or maybe Zelkova)? Any thoughts?
