Question for Osoyoung about summer pine grafting

Lately, you've been posting about post summer equinox pine root work/repotting and it got me wondering: Do you think it might be advantageous to do pine scion grafting at this time too? Last year, just for a hoot, I performed 20 Japanese black pine scion grafts on
September 12. I've lost about 3 grafts so far but I probably won't know what kind of success rate I've had until
the middle of summer. Do you think I might be able to push that Sept. 12 grafting date back to late June?

Well, you know you are asking the worst free-scion grafter about this. I have yet to make one successfully! Maybe @markyscott, @River's Edge, @Adair M, or @thumblessprimate1 can give you some informed advice. I have yet to figure out why I am so bad at it.

I just know that the cambium is expanding fastest near the time of the summer solstice. In principle this should be good for establishing a graft, but pines get very 'goopy' when cut this time of year.

I would not reccomend that for the following:
Sap flow is higher and it is harder to match cambium without interference.
More active growth puts more strain and less time before the cambium must match to keep up with the scions demand.
It would be very difficult if not impossible to find suitable size and condition of scions.
Many things are possible with specialized aftercare and specialized equipment so i would not rule out successful grafting at any time.

I seriously don't know much. I'm just lucky so far. A lot of trial and error. Not had success with pines yet.
