Just a quick question about my ficus. I know that a lot of them aerial roots but do all of them? I have a ficus I bought at a local store and they dont have any aerial roots and the plant is in a very small pot. Its so tight in the pot that water doesn't even go down through the soil for several minutes (like 5).

If I repot it and put it in something a little bigger, do you think it will grow out? Also I have a bunch of haydite that I was going to plant it in. Is that ok?

Also, I read to stick the ficus in a bag and create a lot of humidity which will cause aerial roots. Is this correct?

Thanks for all the help.

Do you know what species you have? Can you post a picture? Some Ficus are more likely to develop aerial roots than others.

In my experience, Ficus will grow out (put on mass in general) quicker in a bigger pot that gives their roots some room to grow - like most other plants. From your description, it sounds like yours is ready for a repot. As long as you're on top of the watering, now is the time. Most tropicals prefer to be repotted when it's hot outside.

I wouldn't go 100% haydite if it were my plant, but some mixture of haydite + organics that drains quickly. I've never used a humidity bag - can't comment on that.
