Hey All,
Bought this prostrata from Jason Chan about a month ago. He’s got a great selection of field grown material if anyone is looking for high quality pre-bonsai in the SoCal area.
First picture — the tree when I brought it home from the nursery. An extremely vigorous bush. The tree was clearly developed for this to be the front. Nice root flare (which you can’t see) and nice movement throughout the line from base to tip.
Second picture — after I went through and cleaned it up. There was a pretty clear candidate for the defining branch. Decided not to get cute and build around that.
Third picture — some of the structural issues on the back half of the tree. Very thick, straight, unbendable branch that didn’t seem to function with the overall design. Also created a parallel line with what I wanted use as the back branch. Ultimately decided it would make a better jin.
Fourth picture — After removing the thick, unbendable branch I needed to bring foliar balance to the design so I applied raffia and guy wire to swing the back branch around the left side.
Fifth picture — defining branch and lower section now in place. Had some issues with negative space as the tree had been left to grow for years shading out any possibility for new buds to develop along the trunk.
Sixth picture — after setting the apex, I worked back down the tree and did my best to create direction and flow while filling in some of that negative space. The tree will be left to grow so it can fill in over time.
Thanks for reading, constructive feedback is always welcome.
