It’s getting time to weed out the elm seedlings coming up in my pots again…. Before anyone says pot them…. This is a every year hassle for me as the big elms in my yard paper mache everything with seeds every spring. They are weeds at this point. If anyone wants some send me a message ….BUT….I digress….It is pretty obvious the benefits of a “bonsai” type soil mix over a mostly pine bark based mix. The roots on the elms growing in my bonsai trees are nice, healthy, shallow and well branched. The roots on the elms growing in the pine base potting mixed are straight down and not branched at all. It’s a good side beside comparison. After seeing this I will be starting my Japanese maple seedlings in 100% bonsai soil.
Pine mix on the left, bonsai soil on the right.

The thought has crossed my mind to grow a few of them to sell, but I’d feel like I’m stealing peoples money 🤣
IDK, some may really enjoy your elms. They are common here, but if they are popping up for you at no cost- Id throw them all in a small bit of dedicated yard turned garden. Fast growers. might as well grow them out and see what they become in a few years. I bet people would buy them.
😀

In China they use Chinese trees, in Europe a lot of European trees and in Japan they use Japanese trees. No reason not to use American trees in America, bonsai should be raining from the sky. That's how you know you're on the right path, at least it seems like a sign to me

Between the elms, hackberry, liquid amber and silver & silver maples in my yard it literally does rain bonsai seeds here in the spring. They are all drop huge amounts of seeds. I enjoy the native trees.

Which kind of live oaks? After all, they’re all alive.

But seriously, there’s coastal, interior, canyon and Texas live oaks. Off the top of my head 😁
Southern live oaks would be preferred, Quercus Virginiana

Lol some of us are plagued with oxalis as weeds in our pots....you have elms as weeds in your pots? 😳

Yep, Ulmus americana are weeds in my pots….. I probably pulled 100 out today and there’s hundreds left to pull. They are in everything 🤣

This is what I mean by “paper mache” everything. This is how the ground looks here every spring. Those are all American elm seeds.

I know the issue, I'm showered with European elm seeds every year. So many that they block the rain drains sometimes.

First world problems 🤦‍♂️
