Today in Virginia, we're getting some beautiful weather. It gave me the itch to work on bonsai. Although my trees are in dormancy, I need to satisfy the itch. So along comes a project where I had all the needed material already. I decided to build a top to my rain water catcher. Last year I got a nice sized tub to catch rain water and quickly found it was catching much more than the rain water. It was catching, leaves, sticks, acorns, and worse yet, dead mice. I also fairly quickly became the local water hole for the squirrels (grrr). So today was the perfect day to build a top which will hopefully just let rain in and keep all the other stuff out.

Let me know what you think. What are some other projects you do to settle your bonsai itch while your trees are dormant?

Nice....

A lot of municipalities give away barrels.
I got 3 from my buddy, screen baskets, overflows, and spigots built in!

I'm all for project ones, I rolled that way last year, but if you you can find some free ones, Craigslist, it's nice to have!

I been sitting. Wired a crap juniper the other day, pondering some new shit I'll call, "earth stands" for now!

Notebook is out, counting the trees making the plans.

You should really get one of those blue rain barrels with a lid and spigot. Unless you use the water in this fairly quickly, it will get stagnant and breed mosquitoes.
A solid lid will be better.

breed mosquitoes.

Yeah, I could have gotten all my necessary protein from them last year.

Something real satisfying about dumping them on the hot pavement!

Zeeka!

The last couple of days have made me realise I really need to sort some form of wind protection out. The wind smashed up my ginseng and has wreaked havoc with some in training and recovery.
Can't really see anything other than a major job working effectively.

You got a ginseng ficus outside right now?

Yeah, I only bring the ficususi in if it looks to drop below 5 or 6 degrees celcius at night, normally it is around 10 or 12.
They don't seem to mind plus the high night time humidity they like.
