Prairie State Bonsai Society is excited to be back at the Morton Arboretum’s Sycamore room for our annual show as a feature of the Arboretum’s Destination Asia festival. We are also excited to announce that Jennifer Price and Chris Baker will be our guest artists/judges this year.
Entrance is free with paid admission to the Arboretum. Bring your family and friends to be transported across the globe as you explore the beautiful cultures and traditions of Asia. You’ll sample delicious food, experience new music, and take in traditional dances that pay homage to this part of the world. This family-friendly weekend will be the cultural event of the summer!
Mark your calendars for Saturday and Sunday August 3rd and 4th!

Show

On those dates PSBS will present a bonsai show featuring about 60 high quality trees from our members and guests. Several of the trees featured in previous years have then gone on to represent our club and even win awards at the National Show in Rochester. The show runs between 9am-4.30pm on both days.

Workshops

On those dates PSBS will present eight workshops at the Thornhill Education Center on the west side of the park. Morning classes will run from 9:00 AM to Noon, and afternoon classes are scheduled from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.

There are two new morning workshops being offered. Both are oriented towards individuals with no or very minimal bonsai experience. On Saturday morning, an introductory class using Chinese Elms will be taught by Linda Camp of BC Bonsai and assisted by Badar Zulqarni. On Sunday morning, a similar class with Juniper Procumbens 'Nana' will be taught by our 2024 Guest Artist Jennifer Price, assisted by Dan Kosta.

The other Saturday morning class will be a Dwarf Alberta Spruce workshop taught by Phil Malhiot. Saturday afternoon we will offer two workshops, a Kusamono workshop taught by Guest Artist Jennifer Price, and a Tiger Bark Ficus workshop taught by Linda Camp of BC Bonsai.

Sunday morning will include a workshop featuring Japanese Black Pine Mikawa presented by Jim Beck of BC Bonsai. The two Saturday afternoon classes will be a Bring Your Own Tree workshop with Guest Artist Jennifer Price offering helpful advice regarding one of your favorite trees, and a Singapore Holly workshop presented by Larry Magee.

All workshops are currently available for enrollment and all have a limited number of participants, so sign up for your favorite class now.

Demonstrations

On those dates PSBS will also present four separate demonstrations in the courtyard across from the Visitor Center and Sycamore Room where the Bonsai Show will be held. These demonstrations are meant to give the people attending the Festival an idea of the effort and care needed to turn a tree into a bonsai.

Demonstrations will be presented at 10:00 AM and 2:30 PM each day of the Festival.

On Saturday morning, our Guest Artist Jennifer Price will be styling a White Spruce. Saturday afternoon, our Guest Judge Chris Baker will present a Dawn Redwood. Sunday morning you will find Larry Magee working on a Pinus Contorta (Lodgepole Pine). Sunday afternoon will find Matt Mazza creating a bonsai from a crabapple pre-bonsai.
