Been looking for none since months for bark and fall colors...
Have these 2 options and hard to fond anything else.
Believe the larger one is out of consideration for bonsai. Wondering about the large one even if I can't make it a bonsai maybe a true to form pomegranate in. Bonsai pot ... any potential for it ?
Are pomegranate forgiving in repot and rootwork ?

"Are pomegranate forgiving in repot and rootwork"

Yes, they are very hardy, and will survive just about anything you throw at them.
Note that they are very quick to propagate from air layers of even large branches, and grow easily from cuttings too.

That first one hands down - maybe pick a trunk and hollow it out along a twist line starting form one of those three trunks(remove two). This is just what I can see from the pic

Wow thanks for all the replies. From old trees I used to post the advice was always to avoid thick unmanageable trunks. Guess I'll go with it this time as its an awesome tree!

I should be receiving the tree in few days. Think I can still repot this year ? We're at 20-2
5 degrees Celsius at daytime and 15 at night for couple more weeks before it drops to 10-15 at daytime and 5-10at night time. Or eould it be best to wait till early spring ?

That’s an awesome pomegranate tree! Please wait until spring time and repot just as the buds start swelling. I’m excited to see what you do with this material, I would love to have a trunk like that.

Definitely wait until spring. Or at least until after the winter solstice and the day lengths are increasing. I would imagine that “spring” comes pretty early in your climate.

Great tree - have fun!!!

I just received the tree, well its still at nursery as i have no space to house it :)
Tree is bigger than I expected but is amazing. It has every sign of age and beauty, yet its too grow as it is to turn into a bonsai and any branch to remove is a bonsai tree on its own. I agreed with nursery owner to keep it there till spring when I can repot it into a bonsai pot or maybe do few air layers and take it home.after they are separated and tre is in a smaller bonsai pot.
Do u think tree can be airlayered to keep one of the 3 main branches so its manageable in a bonsai pot ? Will airlayers take on older wood ?
Appreciate any plans or drawings on how to work the tree so I can plan ahead. Also need to source a pot large enough to fit it so any advice on pot shape and color.
A few better pics abd one showing the moss on branches which I'm guessing took years to develop Screenshot_20231212_151307_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20231212_151328_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20231212_151354_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20231212_151401_Gallery.jpg

Couldn't repot the tree in spring 24 so it had one year to wait. Been a weird year as we had more hot periods during jan which caused the trees to start waking up early.
Repotted as buds started opening up ...
Found this huge 1 meter pot to fit it so went straight to a larger bonsai pot. Actually I don't think I'll go smaller on the pot as I feel it matches the branches width...
Luckily tree had a small rootball in the nursery pot and it went out easily, still shocked with how little root mass it has.
Soil quality was great luckily so was easy to detach without loosing more than a handful of roots total.

It's been a week since we repotted and the buds that we're popping out have not moved . It's in a shady spot where it'll stay i guess for lack.of better space. Watering daily and fingers crossed it'll go through the repoting fine.
