I let this one and a few others grow a year. It will go into Full Bloom this summer and in early September I will give it its first styling/wiring/trimming for a 4H Bonsai Demonstration. I see potential in this one - Pokomoke Miniature Crape Myrtle.

I know how people hate to hear things like this, but your little crape myrtle would be so much better after no more than 2 years of growing in the ground.

As of now, there is much too much top for the thin trunk.

Nothing I did not know but thank you for pointing it out :p I choose plants like this to hack up to inspire the kids to have an interest. The potential I spoke of should have included it is 28 inches wide and will allow me to show them how things are done in general as we interact. I have far larger but they are in various stages. This one will give me a chance to show them a fresh victim being worked on. I also have some extra Quince(a bit larger) which I will use the same way for another demonstration. Kind of funny honest as this one will go into the ground next Spring to "catch up" a bit. It allows me to do these things free of charge to local NPO.

Very nice of you Grim to try and get the younger generation interested. Will you plan for twin trunk on this one?

Yes indeed as it is that way naturally. Also the substrate is mounded a bit covering nice roots. It will give me an opportunity to show them many things and take enough time to answer a LOT of questions. Kind of a nice experience as at least 2 or 3 will bring their plants they have been caring for since I started the program and I work with them as well. It normally goes 6 hours and it really makes me happy to see mostly teenagers show a keen interest. Soda and hot dogs from Buffalo NY helps a bit too :P

This looks to be a Dwarf or Dazzle. Do they get much bigger anyway? I have an older Dazzle and the trunk doesn't seem to be increasing. I also have a Dwarf (in the ground for 12 years) and the trunk is maybe 1 1/2 inches. However, the several standard varieties I own have plenty of "chunk in the trunk". Just a question...

Also, It's good to know your working with young folks. For that, I tip my hat to you and say "Thanks".

It is a Pocomoke Miniature Crape Myrtle - Lagerstroemia Pocomoke that grows 4 foot tall and 5 foot wide if you let them. They can and do develop a nice base over a few short years if left on their own. I am certain they are considered miniature for that reason but they still make a very nice smaller display at 2 foot or so when mature. Also the foliage remains tiny and the flowers are very small. Good proportion without a ton of work. One more nice thing is they bloom in dead hot Summer!
