Hey all, I live in Tacoma, WA. I was out checking my trees today and noticed root growth starting on some scots pines! Anyone else noticing an early start to the season?20250219_154634.jpg

That they do.

Actually conifer roots have been growing except when the ground was frozen for the two cold stretches here. One of the reasons we dig conifers in pots into the ground and mulch these over during winter is to take build stronger root growth compared to being on the bench or even just sitting on the ground.

Many conifers are still slightly active right through winter in most milder climates which is why they benefit from some winter fertiliser. Not sure where the cut off temperature for stopping root growth is but we never see temps that low down here.

In my experience in the PNW pine roots don’t stop growing in the winter. I hesitate to call it an early start when it’s a continuation of something stretching all the way back to the middle of the previous growing season.
