I just bought a small varrigated parsons juniper yesterday and I was wondering if that was a good selection for bonsai or if I should take it back and get a shimpaku. It has pretty nice shape to it growing up at about a 45% angle and twisting back and to the left unfortunately I can't post pics on here from my phone but pictures to come on Facebook. My name is Jacob Watson.

Shimpaku is better hands down, especially since variegated species are not considered appropriate for bonsai by many people.

If they are even close to the same size and stage in training I would go for the Shimpaku. That being said Parsonii Juniper is very hardy and is used for grafting stock.

Jacob,

Have you gone to the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville yet? If not, you should make the trip and take a look at the Staples Bonsai Collection. See if you can meet Arthur Joura while you are there. Also, see if you can connect with the Blue Ridge Bonsai Club.

Regards,
Martin
