I hope to almost topiary my gorgeous mugo to cut down on the way it blocks the view from my house. I want to eventually create something like the ones I see in Japanese gardens where they have many clumps with open spaces between. The candle growth should start in a month or so here. I fear for my Mugo if I do this wrong. Any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to the nut house! Here’s a link that may help you. Our resident mugo master recently passed away but his methods and techniques will live on.

The 'topiary with open spaces' you refer to is probably what is called Niwaki. You can search the net for methods used to create these styled garden trees.
Just be aware that mugho grow a little differently than the more common Japanese Black pines. If you can find specific tips for Japanese White pines follow that as white pines have similar growth pattern to Mugho.

Thanks for this Vance Woods’ reference. Already learned lots!
