This is my second pine, I bought yesterday.(Well my first is a mugo pine, still alive) It was in a 5 gallon pot from Lowes. The root was in 100% clay, so I removed half and put it in 50:50 pumice and lava. Its about 3 feet tall and the trunk is about 3 inches. I learned from my limited experience with conifers, to promise myself to leave it alone till next year, the trunk is what attracted me. So, this year I will water it and fertilize it and dream of its future.

If you've become enamoured with pines, take a look at what grows naturally in your area.
They're already conditioned to your local conditions.

I still hang on to my japanese black and red pines but I'm really into procurring pines that you find growing in the great Northwest. 5 needle like limber and white bark. Ponderosa, lodgepol and
shore pine.

As strange as it sounds, I was encouraged to get acquainted with my own pines by a japanese teacher. :)
