WNC Bonsai
Masterpiece
Now that this big old boy is in my hands I thought it time to start a progression thread to document its development. @Zach Smith pulled it out of a Louisiana swamp in the winter of 2019 and I snapped it up as soon as he posted a photo of it. It is big—29” soil to chop, 5” across at 5” above the soil line, and the top growth is now 15” so we’re looking at 44” which is about as tall as I want it. Zach suggested an informal upright style and I agree so off we go. Zach shipped it to me this week and I moved it from the shipping box into this black plastic tub within about an hour of its delivery this afternoon. Zach had it in lava and tree bark 50:50 mix and I potted it up in a pumice/haydite and composted pine bark mix of 1:1:2 so about half organic. It is now sitting in the shade and protected from the wind on the porch of my wife’s pottery while it recovers from 6 days in a dark shipping box. In honor of the collector I decided to name it Old Zach, unless he objects. Here are some photos to start things off.
