Picked up this old gold juniper from a nursery a few days ago. The thing was a total mess! As soon as i saw the promising trunk on this one i knew it was the one. Now I've been growing plans and trees forna few years now but I decided to take up bonsaing. Right now I just have the tree styled and a few wires in place to get the general shape going. I want to focus of the tree to be the leaning horizontal branch. Any suggestions? Comments? Input about old golds that you wish someone would have told you? I'll upload pictures of what it looked like when I got it to what I have now.

First welcome. And to better help you please add your location to your profile. Your location is as important and the species of tree.

It appears that your tree in inside. Please remember that this and most bonsai are not indoor trees. They die indoors. Your soil looks heavy and may cause over-watering and death. What type of soil do you have your tree in? As for styling, you need to let is grow and become strong. The first two things to learn in the art of bonsai are patience and the ability to not only keep a tree alive, for years, but to have it thrive.

I actually just moved it outside an hour ago! I kept it in the original soil but added some pea gravel to increase drainage. Do you think I overstyled it too much? I read that cutting branches close to the bottom of the tree will slow the trunk growth, but I'm fairly content with the size of this trunk. I'm looking to get a relatively small bonsai out of this.

Use the search bar in the upper right of the screen. There is a guy here that collected a really nice one. May be some info there.

What you get is relative to the work you put in.

Most of this work being reading.
Little on your tree!
