This started as a House money juniper. It’s transformed quite well since acquiring about 1 year ago this month. Its variety is Buffalo but this nursery find has similar traits of European Sabina’s I see online. Drastic line changes, soft yet sturdy foliage (Doesn’t droop while growing naturally). Bright almost iridescent green color. Not quite as natural character filled, but not bad for $15.

Second styling over the last few days. I chose a front change and may eventually change more about this tree. More jins, Shari and other features.

You've done a great job setting the structure, looking forward to watching this one fill out. The jin in the back looks incredible natural.

Any tips for getting guy wires to not slide along the trunk? I've had trouble with that, but it looks like yours has less slack around the trunk side than mine do.

Thanks Panda. They are def very tight, but a big part is location and also using some type of piece to soften the blow of the wire on the trunk. I use irrigation tubing, and when tensioned up enough, it grips the wood well enough to not slide. Honestly, if your guy wires are slipping, it’s either wrong location or not tight enough!

Yes, usually I have no trouble if I can latch onto a stump or something similar. I have some tubing in my cart on Amazon, so I'll definitely give that a try (I had scavenged something for it previously).

thanks! your house money thread is awesome, I plan to grab some clearance junis this fall and emulate your work.

Thanks! Look for juniperus sabina. Lots of varieties within that. “Buffalo” “tam” and others. Chinensis unless it’s a shimpaku variety is not great. But most Sabina, even nursery stock, is relatively stable.

i've noticed this with my Old Gold. Leggy, slow growth, ugly color. Far and away my most likely tree to end up in a landfill, but I'm gonna hold onto it to learn as much as I can, until i need to make space.

thanks for the tip on sabina! i hear this one put down a lot, but that might just be for people looking to make proper bone-sigh. i just want cool trees!

i really like procumbens too, but I have a lesson coming up that I think will give me another of those.

Procumbens is a clear nursey stock outlier. The foliage can get dense somewhat easy, but its visual representation is different than what is available typically. Most of what you find is chinensis and some Sabina. If you find Procumbens with a good trunk, that is a def option. But not all have a great trunk. In regards to other available material at nurseries? I’ll take Sabina over chinesnis any day of the week.

Settling. Nice early morning shot with better light, showing how green the foliage truly is. Love thw Buffalo Sabina variety.

One thing I am noticing more is the big hole right in the middle. I’d like to fill that up eventually with either foliage or deadwood. I may also Jin that lowest right pad eventually.
