I was going to reply to growing from seed but another thread seemed a better option. This is a Nishiki JBP cutting I took to make an exposed root over a piece of hard/dense lava. This variety produces the "wings" type bark and I wanted to show off the bark in a different style that's not normally seen. It's about 8years old and was started right out of the cutting bed. Very little "bonsai" work has been done to it. It's been wired once to give the basic style, 2010, and only cutting candles in June of the past couple of years while leaving two or three escape branches to to enhance vigor and size. I'm satisfied with the size but another year of good growth will improve the bark. Next fall it will get a complete bud and needle job along with wiring. This has been a fun little tree.

Very cool for only 8 years. It shows how quickly things can get good if proper technique is used. Thanks!

Thanks Brian

Fred, The original tree was bought as nishiki, I'm not sure if that is a cultivar name or just the generic term for cork bark.

Nice, Wood. Good attachment. It will be fun to watch the bark wing up around that rock!
Happy Thanksgiving.

Gary, thats over a rock right? Its hard to see as the picks are kind of blurry, if its not over a rock the trunk is massive. Nice looking tree either way.
