I was out browsing my local garden shops and came across a bush they called an Amber ninebark. Some of them had nice size trunks a good nebari. The bark is awesome looking. Does anybody have an experience with these plants? I have done some research and not finding much.

What are the leaves like? Does it seem to backbud from old wood or trunk? A cool trunk and roots are important but there are a few more things to think about. Thats what Ive been realizing lately, you need a combo of traits to be good bonsai.

Yes that is the correct species. My research says the leaves are small but not sure about back budding

Thanks. Everything I have seen says the amber variety is more compact than others, 5 to 6 feet mature height. I might give it a try. The ones I saw were about 12 to 18 inches with nice movement and girth. The price of $30 was a little more than I wanted spend until I had a little more information. I will probably trim the roots and repot and wait until after it blooms before pruning
