Since I posted the picture of my little volunteer elm trees I have a few requests for the little fellas. I'm going to need more. I went out and collected some seeds. These trees grow like rockets so growing them from seed won't take long. I will also have full control of them from the get go. They want to grow straight up. Not going to let these do that.
I got probably 200 plus seeds. I put some in trays and the rest I'm planting in a friends field. In a couple of years I hope to be swimming in American elms. Maybe even drowning.

Score! Those grow very fast - going to be a fun project. If a lot grow you might want to bundle 10 - 12 together for an interesting trunk ;)

I've got 3 from last year's crop wired tight under the soil level. Hopefully they will layer themselves.
What I have left of last year's group I'm going to set on the ground so the roots can escape. They really grow fast in the ground.
I probably planted 100 or so of these seeds. If only half grow I'll be swamped with trees. Can't wait.

I'm going to do all kinds of things to whatever sprouts up. Might try some rafts, cascades, clumps and forests of course. Going to take one and find out just how much fertilizer is too much. Whatever I can come up with.

You got the seeds. How long before they sprout if you plant them now?

I'm not sure but we'll find out. I planted them last Sunday. Well some. I'm planting the rest around the area. Maybe not for bonsai but to just to have elms around.

Update?

Here's the shaded ones I brought home.
Still green.
And some Gibson, I mean fender washers to thread come spring.

I haven't taken any pictures but I have around 125 ,150 baby elms. The seeds took right off. Some must be 12 inches tall and about as big as a pencil.

In the ground 3 to 4 years. In buckets or colanders maybe more. Maybe. Pump water and fertilizer to them and they grow like mad. I've never grown anything from seed before. Elms seem like my best bet.
I have ones from the year before that are half an inch or better.

Do you have any older ones that you've started devloping? I'd love to see pictures.

I'm working away from home but when I get there I'll take some sure.
Grimlore has a couple from that batch. Don't know if he has pictures or not.
