so i was asked to clean the gutters the other day and i stumbled across a world of saplings...just wondering if from the pictures that im about to post if anyone can tell me what the plants are, and if they are any good for bonsai? or should i just let grow in the yard to be regular trees. and also i found a maple sapling in my backyard that i moved to a pot due to landscapers not being careful, if anyone can tell me the type of maple that would be amazing.....thank you in advance for your help :D

They look like sugar or red maples to me but Im not 100% sure.

Where on Long Island are you located and are there alot of sugar maples around the house the area you got them from?

Its going to take a very, very long time before you can do anything with them besides let them grow.

im located in Nassau County on the south shore....i actually have red and japanese maples around my house, one sugar maple that i found recently so thats why im curious and unknown of what they are, and i know that they are works in process since they are so small, just wanted to know if i should keep protected for my bonsai material or just let grow in my garden?

Hello Jim.. It will probably be about 6 or 7 years before you can start working on these for bonsai. This does not mean that they can be bonsai in 6-7 years. This means you can start working on them. As far as when they could become good bonsai.. Maybe 9-10 years plus. If you want to work on something right now. I would suggest older material. Maybe something with a 1 inch or greater trunk base.

They also look a lot like silver maples. I would say at that stage all maples probably look similiar.
