I believe I have exhausted all of my discovered resources and am now coming to the community for assistance. I am returning to bonsai and starting small and within the appropriate confines of my location which is northwestern AZ sitting at approximately 3200 feet. I would just like to find the following three pre-bonsai stock to start: #1. Chinese Elm (8-10 inches) #2. Texas Ebony (8-10 inches) and #3 Mesquite (8-10 inches). I have found numerous Chinese Elm at the height I appreciate but cannot in good faith pay $25-$35 in freight for one tree. Any direction as to known vendors/growers, please let me know. Thanks in advance. jff

If there’s no good bonsai nursery near you, that $25–35 for shipping fees is a small cost especially id you’re getting a good tree in return.

I’m lucky in that in my area there are numerous great prebonsai nurseries around me. But if there weren’t, I’d pay shipping in a heartbeat

My elms are a little small and my Texas ebony are closer to 6" but I have em. I might be able to strike a Mesquite cutting but it's not a sure thing this late in the year. If you want I can give it a shot and I charge the absolute minimum I can for shipping. That said I use priority 2-3 day USPS as I don't want things in a box for an extended period. Shoot me a pm if interested.

Why limit yourself to these three species? Check out what is sold and available in local nuseries. That 35$ + cost of tree could get you something thats best suited to youre climate.

Agreed. If @jffleck considers $25 freight charges, then the local nurseries and woods are the only recourse.
It would be nearly impossible for me to mail most of my trees for less than $50. A few but not many.
Folks shipping put a lot more effort into the process than you might think, and the cost has gone up a lot
in the last couple of years with the overall cost of doing business including fuel.

Absolutely, this is why I was hesitant to start selling again. It's almost cost prohibitive. Yes, shipping is almost an art unto itself. I take a great deal of pride in things getting to their destination in good shape.

There's truly no such a thing as free shipping. Look at the increased cost of Amazon Prime membership.
I find it very helpful that you have most of what the OP is looking for, and even offered to attempt a cutting.
Talk about service with a smile and a hand shake...

I mean one of my favorite parts of bonsai is obtaining a plant that I have been looking for so I get it. I just love collecting rare ones. I have to say @jffleck you might be happier with Olneya tesota, Desert Ironwood. I might be able to snag a cutting of that one as well.

I’m in south Texas with land infested with Mesquite trees. At the moment it’s 107 degrees and they don’t care one bit about it. I don’t know the going rate for selling little mesquite trees but I can definitely help you out. My question is what kind of mesquite tree are you looking for? I have several that produce the legume but they seem to vary in appearance tree to tree. Let me know.
