I bought a Chinese elm around October last year that was kept inside a green house year round so when I brought it home I had to keep it inside as well.
Sometime in March or April I started to air layer off the top 2/3 of the tree which I finally seperated about a month ago.
It base has responded by throwing out shoots everywhere! I'm leaving all of them to help it recover and help thicken the trunk some more. Next spring I will remove a lot and keep only the branches that are going to be used and needed as sacrifice branches.
My worry is I was hoping to leave the tree outside all year but I am afraid a lot (90%) of the new growth will die back since it hasn't all hardened off.
I know this may sound like a silly question as it seems obvious it will die. Just looking for some opinions.
I really wanted to leave it out this winter but I guess it will have to wait.
My second question is should I be bringing it inside now. Since the season is changing I don't want it To start going dormant then forced right back into warm conditions when or if I have to bring it in.
Thanks in advance,
Kevin
