New Forest-dug Acer Rubrum/Red Maple/Swamp Maple

Thanks for the replies. I have the tree loose in a pond of water for now. Should I put it straight into a relatively shallow container to start getting it trained now?

Also, any tips on this species (acer rubrum) are greatly appreciated. Since it’s native habitat is swampy areas, does it like dense substrate that’s sopping wet all the time? What type of substrate and fertilizer are best for this species?

I’d build a wood box for it and let it recover for a year in a pumice-based soil. You could add a bit of organic material if you like.

I’d make the box as shallow as possible to cover the nebari sufficiently without the soil being mounded up. You could probably cut the big roots back further as suggested above.

Nice find!!

I would cut off the lower sprouts to help encourage the upper growth. Maybe gently wire your new leader after a few weeks
