I bought this in May at the local Menards. I liked how dense the foliage was, and the price was nice.

I’ve shown this plant before on my ‘will’s back yard buddies’ thread, but I’ve decided now to give it its own progression thread. 😀

As purchased in may 2020.

Yikes!!!
Played with repot angles to make this less grotesque, but here are the angles in July 2020

Nasty branch structure for sure. But this tree likes the camera.

This would be my plan, if it were my tree, and I would be in no rush to get it there, but I would cut off all of the branches marked in red within the next two years or so, starting with the thickest two next spring. I would also cut of the branches marked in blue, but only after letting them grow way out and away as sacrifices to generate taper.
I know it is a drastic and long term approach, and I understand if it is not for you. But the thick right angle parallel branches would be a deal breaker for me if I didn’t break them first.

cheers!
