Couple weekends ago I had the pleasure of making a trip down to Camellia Forest. I placed a pretty large order that had some trees that was pick up only so that was my excuse to make the trip. I was hoping to link up with @Bonsai Nut to nursery hop, but he had prior plans.
The nursery is down a fairly long dirt/gravel driveway. If it wasn’t for the signs, you would never know it was there. When I got there, I parked and then walked the grounds taking pictures. This nursery is pretty impressive if you’re into camellias. He had at least six huge hoop houses packed with them. Some were in bloom, others already bloomed, and the rest about to bloom. After seeing so many camellias in bloom at one time I can understand why people go crazy about them…. no different to how I go crazy about azaleas. He also had a huge tom out in the back, not sure what his plans were for it.
After completing my loop I linked up with one of the staff to help collect my order. Then I met Dave (the owner) and he helped finish picking the rest of the order. I had a good conversation with Dave about his nursery and the camellias and the huge princess persimmons tree in the parking lot. But I had to cut it short as I had to get back on the road.
While the drive down there took me about 5hrs, it took me about 8hrs to get back. And yes, I drove down and back just to pick up those trees. It was worth it to see the nursery in person, and I’ll most likely be back in the fall to pick up some more camellias. Hopefully @Bonsai Nut will be free to do some nursery hopping then.
