Ignore the pot its in as it was sold to greenwood from somones collection but they wanted to keep there pot it was in so corrin put it in this cheap pot.
I have purchased a new pot for it.

Its quite a formal tree so i went for a formal pot for it.
The pot is also just like my other new pots a Walsall ceramics pot.

That's a nice maple. However, I think the pot choice is a bit big for the tree. It looks like you're going to need to work on those long internodes also. Should be a fun project though.

Lol I knew if i posted that pic of them together like that someone would say that.
It is about half inch to big but it looks worse from the camera trickery and the top pot slipped forward a bit.
But the internal measurements of the new pot are the same lenth as the old pot but 2cm wider

Yeah i have built a shade and wind shelter for my maples as i live at the foot of the malvern hills. uk.
And I get a lot of wind blasting down the hill and swirling in our garden so the new shelter fixes this:)

Ha!!! Your neighbors down-wind will enjoy the fert "perfume".....if you use organics.:p:D:D:D:D:D
Or yesterdays curry!!!:(:D:D:D:D

New pot nice, might be a wee bit big and a little heavy, visually. Meh....it's your garden, rock it!!!!!!!!:cool::cool::cool:

Does anyone have any experience with this cultivar its acer palmatum asahi zuru ?
I have a 15 ft one in my yard. Hadn’t heard anyone mention this cultivar in years and had almost forgotten the name! But no, no experience in a pot. The leaves are a lovely shape and the branches naturally fan out out in the beautiful flat shape of the non-cultivar types and the leaves are beautiful to look through.

Very nice tree, please post updates as you fine tune it? :-)

Oh, and yes, that is a very nice Bonsai indeed I would say! Some of the internodes are longish, but not terribly so for that style and size of tree. You will need to keep some elegance in the branches and stubby internodes won’t help. I look forward to lots of pics when it buds out and with leaves. Will be interested to see how much size reduction there will be in a pot. Full size is not excessive on mine. Perhaps 1.5”.

I think a maple suits a rounded pot. Round or oval, whatever but rounded. I’m sure this isn’t your final ppt but my 2 cents, rounded says elegance, grace, gentle, words that are asssociated with maple.
Your pot is straight, sharp corners, professional, which to me are not maple.
Anyways!

Yes, maple in UK.. leaf scorch. Jeez, wind has ruined my maple last 2 years.. I’ve made a green house now but need to wait till summer to prune mine then I put it in there. The wind is uk is the worst enemy buddy.
Looks like a good tree you have, extenuate that nebari, make more of it and what style you thinking, informal broom? It’s a straight trunk with 0 taper so I can only assume that unless you plan on chopping and building for taper?

Not a cultivar I’ve heard of before!

Interesting though, I’ve a green Acer P and it’s buddibg out but it’s about.. 5-7 days behind this tree.

Hi conor yeah the reason we chose this style of pot is because the tree is quite formal and bolt upright so it can pull off a more formal pot because of this.
But yeah I am definatly untreated on other people's opinions on this subject.
As far as future plans on styling im not going to be doing an awful lot to it to be honest im just going to improve the overall shape and ramification on it.
I actually like the straight upright trunk on this tree its different and I'm going to make the most out of what it has.
This tree has been in an unheated greenhouse as it got repotted and the weather is so inconsistant so yeah it is probably a week ahead of my other maples.

Oh for sure. Pot choices are more subject to opinion than tree styling. I can see what you mean, formal broom means formal and straight edged pot. I get that :).

No there’s not a whole lot I can see you have to do to that trunk.
If you are going formal broom though, I guess just thinking of thicker branches at bottom, thinner at top, then development of the secondary and tertiary branching. Simple right ;).
But seriously, doing that, 3-4 years, “finished” tree :).
Are you going to do anything to improve nebari?

Yeah the nabari will be improved over the years when repotting amount other things I have a pic of the nabari taken whilst it was in its old pot

We can roughly see the nebari from pics, it’s not bad at all, just can be improved.
The whole “spread roots out, screw on a board” thing, are you gonna do that?

Yeah it is tough to see in those latest pics.
I will wet the soil a bit more before taking pics as the soil is camoflaging the nabari a bit lol.
