Last year this weekend I spent five days at the coast. Found time to travel to Muranaka's and found this pine in the ground. George told me it was going to be dug up. I wanted it.

Went back in April to purchase said pine and take it home. Some shots around the horn.

Today I worked on needle plucking and removed many more heavy branches to help finalize the canopy before wire.

The picture on the left is the one from above after plucking. The photo on the right is after cutting out some of the double branches, turning some to jin, and reducing some of the larger ones above.

Now all I have left to do is wire it out.

Tomorrow is another day.....

Hey Al,
I'm curious as to the removal of heavy branches in Sept. Did they bleed a lot? I know your weather is a lot like mine in that Sept. is still pretty warm. I just did some minor pruning on mine a week or two ago and still got a little sap bleed off. :)

Progressing nicely, Smoke. Looking forward to watching this one. Nice eye while it was still in the ground btw....

A few little blobs about the size of a bb. Not that bad. I got a few little beads around the size of a pin head today.

It would look like the movie Carrie in July though!

Beautiful JBP,
nice taper, nice trunk line. It could fill in very nicely.

Ooh, Al!! I think I'm in love!! No, seriously, sweet pine, dude. I am on the verge of purchasing a JBP of this caliber. It is at the perfect stage of development, IMO. Not a lifetime to get into shape, but still needs some TLC to get it where you want it to go. Excellent choice my friend! (Nice work too! ;))

Now I just hope that Lone Pine has something that compares...

Great progress, Al! Thanks for sharing.

Love the trunk line on this one.
Nice work so far

Was this the one you posted a while back as your "retirement pine" or something of the like? Either way, i like it and it looks like it did really well for you this year. How big is it?

Thanks for sharing with us.

Al thanks for the post. It shows us what and how much can be done at what times of the year. It also shows that we need to choose quality material to begin with. Thanks for sharing. Very informational and skillfully done!

Can't wait to see how it looks this time next year, and the next, and the next. Thanks
