Mountain Meadows Nursery is a great one run by Michael Balough and his son Ryan. It is located about 15 miles north of Asheville NC at exit 13 off I26. I’ve been buying from him for about 14 years, both for landscaping and bonsai. I just paid them a visit today to pick up a replacement bald cypress for my group planting and my wife found a couple of plants she could not live without. They apparently recently restocked as there wasn’t an empty space in the greenhouses and outside. I was especially surprised to see they are now stocking Japanese and European larch, and a wide variety of yews. I also took note of a number of Atlantic White Cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides) with excellent trunks and roots. If I didn’t already have one I got there several years ago I would have grabbed one myself. They specialize in conifers, (Michael was president of the American Conifer Society several years ago) but also stock a lot of deciduous species. If you are in the Asheville area it is definitely worth a ride out there. They generally are closed Monday and Tuesday but if that is your only free day you can arrange an appointment to visit as long as you plan far enough ahead. Here’s a link to their website:

Just left there and thankfully the rain held off long enough that I could search carefully for some gems:

Pinus parviflora 'Aoi' 6903547202, Tsuga canadensis 'Stockman's Dwarf' 6903547377, Pinus parviflora 'Ogon', Cedrus atlantica 'Sapphire Nymph', Pinus parviflora 'Azuma goyo'

Thanks!

Glad to hear you had a fruitful visit. I wish I had more full sun places to fill with more of his stock.

Pics didn't post bummer.
Bonsai Nut started a thread on MM 2020 so I had to visit when we went to Ashville. Was Fall and I guess the best had been picked through but managed to get 2 trees to practice on.

Spring is definitely the best time to go. In addition to selling at the nursery, they sell at shows just about every weekend, so the stock gets depleted over the summer..

I posted this in "What's your most recent purchase" with them in the back of our van. The JWP are in 3 gallon pots, but the Atlas cedar and Tsuga are 1 gallon.

I wish I had seen the Cedrus when I was out there last month. Nice looking👍

Just a quick update to this thread. I was visiting my mom outside of Asheville for a few days and saw this thread so decided to drive out to Mountain Meadows. It’s a bit of a drive from town, but worth it. Apple Maps has no problem finding the driveway, and there are some parking spots on the left when you pull in.

Anyway, on to the important stuff. It’s a solid little tree farm with a mix of bonsai in pots, starter material and mature trees for the yard. Strong on pines and juniper, some cedars and maples, and a smattering of good shrubs. Noteworthy for bonsai folks, a good selection of “young” Kingsville boxwoods (and some gray’s boxwoods). I picked up one of the Kingsvilles. I also picked up a baby amethyst wisteria (½” diameter at the base).

I've been wondering how Mountain Meadows was affected by the hurricane flooding back in September.

I've been there a few times, my only issue is that most of his stuff is grafted but mike is a great guy and showed me his propagation setup and is a huge wealth of knowledge. Great place to get hinoki though, I think most of his hinoki are not grafted and priced quite competitively. He has ALOT of specimens that he has planted decades ago and I think it's cool that you can grab a young tree and see what it will look like in 25-30 years
