Excuse the slip.
But digging in the yard, I think I struck a motherlode of Mycorrhizae in some mulchy topsoil about 3-4 inches down.

I know how beneficial it is for pines yet mine haven't ...generated... any for a long time.

No trees need repotting this year as my unfortunate experience with some bad akadama made me repot EVERYTHING last summer into lava, pumice, etc.
If I were repotting, I'd splash a good bit of that white stuff around the bottom of the mix.

BUT...I'm wondering if it would be of any benefit to dig some and then dig some SMALL pits in the soil of the presently potted trees and introduce it that way.

Think it would do anything good?

I wouldn't trust it. I buy the good stuff, Great White!

I think it has been pointed out elsewhere around here recently, but most of the fungus mycelium you find in mulch and litter is likely to simply be saprophytic (saprotrophic might be better, but that's another discussion) - it's just breaking down and living off of the dead organic matter. If it's associated with the roots of a tree of a similar type to your bonsai, that might yield a higher likelihood of viable symbiosis.

Some plants are very picky about what fungus they will associate with, and some are not; the converse is true of fungi too. For example, many orchid species will not germinate in the wild without the presence of a particular fungus genus or even individual species.

If you are just adding decomposition helpers to your mix (the most likely result of your experiment), then they will simply break down any organic matter in your soil. This could probably be good or bad, depending on a number of other factors . . .

I reckon it's more likely to do bad.....

Unless there is a tree of the same species there too, it's not likely to benefit the tree as I understand.....

Mike...that isn't your real name?

I've thought about using a similar product but am worried about it just draining straight through. Do you have a say on this?
I sprinkle a bit on the base layer of soil when repotting, per directions. It is also recommended to water with it In newly repotted trees.

The stuff [ Mycorrhizae ] is supposed to be plant specific.

We just use aged compost and let nature do what she needs to.
Plus, inorganic fertiliser is supposed to damage mycorrhizae.
Please note - supposed to ????

Too lazy to look up the spelling of Mycorrhizae [ so I just copied Mike's. ]
Apologies.
Good Day

Stickroot

Please laugh at or with me.
I thought it was a can of Beer
Am I dense or what ?

Seriously, we are cheap, compost is free.
Plus, would have to Amazon $$$$$ to ship as well.

However, best of growing to you.

Boy am I dumb

Lmao! Yeah the Great White is $21 for that 1oz bottle. My teacher says that a small amount of charcoal pieces in your soil encourages natural mycorrhizae.

I have never believed in adding this stuff to your soil. I actually had some years ago, mass zero benefit and had fantastic success recently without ever using it...

Snake oil if you ask me. Never seen any proof that adding it to soil gives any advantages, the trees make it naturally and it seems to be more A product of a happy tree than a requirement to get a tree happy...

No troop?

I think it's pretty well established that there can be benefits with products like this in some circumstance, protection from dampening off disease with inoculated seedling plants and subsequent increased vigour. Stuff like that, I don't think is all sales pitch has been satisfactorily demonstrated I believe.
I would not use it on my trees either though, prefer not to add non native competitors. Maybe if one had to douse with fungicide for something it could be really good disease suppression to add the stuff, hard to say really, definitely it is more than snake oil, plenty of research to back it up, not sure if anyone really knows the most appropriate uses in all situations though.

Sounds like we should keep the

"Mic Checks"

Had the Motörhead Lager in Sweden two years ago. Super tasty stuff, but expensive as fuck.
Not a w(h)ine guy, but the shiraz is supposed to be good too.
Haven't had any others yet, but I got my eyes on a bunch.
