How do you keep these maples fungus and disease free?

Mine spend spring in a ‘convertible’ greenhouse. I control rain and humidity by rolling up or unrolling the roof. They are in a greenhouse because i like to keep temperatures above 8C (46F) in spring, but in areas where frost protection is not necessary, any kind of roof (a temporary gazebo or awning?) to control the rain might be a good idea

Just before buds really start to move, i apply lime sulphur

As buds start to swell and open, i alternate between fungicide and insecticide (miticide) and apply one or the other once a week

Maybe this is overkill, but I prefer to be pro-active about prevention

How do you keep these maples fungus and disease free?

Healthy air circulation, free-draining soil, dappled shade (for most of them), and as little chemicals for me.

Acer palmatum are mountain trees in Japan. adapting them to our (respective) local climate needs some trial and error I guess.

My sango kaku maples always look best in May, having an ethereal green glow with just a hint of red on the tips. By June the leaves will be straight light green and somewhat boring.

Haha... there are times when run out to take a picture of yet another hue and my wife gets very annoyed. Worth it, IMO.

But this tree is currently on my shit list because it doesn't wanna air layer. Air layering my coral bark maples is easy peasy. This one is being difficult. And it refused to air layer last season as well.

Another regular green JM, but with much “redder” buds



And a third supposed green AP, but with much lighter, almost yellow new foliage and pink buds. It also has some good bark on the trunk compared to the others, although it’s only a 3 year old layer

Great to see these spring colours.

Here, even those in big pots and in semi-shade have suffered from the exceptionnally hot and dry summer. Those that have resisted are early in turning into nice colours, like 'Red Wine' :
