Mame Bonsai

Watering is the most difficult part, sometimes multiple times in hot weather. I enjoy the ease of handling, trimming and training, and variety of species.
Being a retired homebody with hand arthritis, mame bonsai satisfies my gardening itch in a smaller, and rewarding scale.

Do they require wintering indoors? I mean.. the whole thing seems like a very delicate balance between life and certain death considering the dish size. lol

The tropicals inside, everything else outside with opensided shelves. A greenhouse fabric canopy roof protects small plants from heavy winter rains.
In summertime, the canopy is covered with aluminized shade cloth to reflect scorching rays. When it's going to be really hot, the clip on umbrellas provide deeper shade. Mind, I'm in coastal Northern California, mild , marine influenced climate....
All in all, no more care than a dog or cat, with similar considerations for water and shelter.

Thank you for the information. I'm about to pot my first. 😁
A small yew that I've had for a couple years.

Summertime is really not the best time to repot bonsai, except tropicals. With our mild winters here, we can sometimes transplant in fall, but most temperate trees have a better survival rate waiting for spring repotting.
Having several starter trees multiplies the fun, and also satisfies the itchy-fingers urge, with plenty to wire, pinch and prune in summertime.

Here are some great YouTube mame bonsai artists, from around the world.
YouTube captions often can be set to auto translate to English...

The list is by no means comprehensive, but should inspire...
Enjoy

Here's hoping for the best... 😆😁

None posted up yet. I just started back up last year. All seedlings, sprouts and cuttings in training mode..
I grew meme years ago, and lost a goid many during a long weekend away during a heatwave, with inadequate instructions to "mame-sitter"... it was heartbreaking. 15 years break.
Now past working and juggling kids, etc, bonsai are again a joy to grow.
Watch some vids, take note of recommended beginner plants, and dig in. Checkout Hirts gardens for starter plants, cheap and a good variety.
Have fun!
