I've been in Atlanta this week for a conference and have been amazed by how many elms I've seen as landscape trees. Cleveland has some here and there, but nothing like this. I'm guessing most of them are Siberian elms, but not all. Are Winged elms also native or at least planted as landscape trees as well? If I'd been here in the spring, I imagine I'd have a field day collecting as many as I could. Lots of volunteers growing in/near hedges that are at least 1/2 inch trunk or so.

On another note, I'll be visiting the botanical garden tomorrow. Looking forward to that.

Actually, all the street tree elms I've seen in the metro area are Chinese elm, Ulmus parviflora. Can't say I've seen Siberian or winged elm, at least planted in the landscape. Chinese elm is perfect for North GA, which is HOT in the summer but can have lows approaching 0 F in the winter.

Really? I'm definitely not 100% on my IDs, so I'm sure you're correct. Fascinating to see them full size :) Do some of them have exfoliating bark? I've seem some trees here that have that as well.

Yes mature Chinese Elms have exfoliating bark. We have dozens of them in the landscapes surrounding my office here in Columbia SC, and Trident Maples are EVERYWHERE around where I work to! Both the Elms and Maples are LOADEDDDDDDDDDD with seeds! Like so many on some of the tridents I suspect it may be bad for their health! Hate to see a tree suffer like that.
If only I could do something to alleviate their pain.... ;)

Chinese elms and tridents are grown as landscape trees here too. Ulmus parvifolia is often sold under the cultivar name "Drake elm". Pretty soon the garden centers go on sale to make room for Christmas trees. Great time to buy and hold until it's time to cut back in spring.

Another common name for parvifolia is lacebark elm. They can be had 2ft tall from the Arbor Day Foundation for $15 delivered to your door.

The botanical garden in Atlanta is pretty good!

You reckon there are more elms in Atlanta than strippers?

LOL I didn't get a chance to count since I was there for work ;)

I will say that the botanical garden really was amazing.
