So I have this lilac cutting(yes it's in a jar, I will move it when it's bigger) and I am just wondering how many years it will take before I can start training! I made sure the parent lilac was in the back so you could see where it's from. Also I understand it takes a super long time! image.jpeg

Putting it in a jar is an easy way to make it an even longer wait!

I would repot it into a colander asap and fertilize like crazy for a few years.

Ok I will do that... Stupid question though, what is a colander and where do I get one? I'm inexperienced and know I wanted a lilac in a few years

A colander is like a strainer- you can use a couple different things. A noodle strainer, a pond basket, aquaponic baskets, rice colanders, etc.

Online is a good source for bulk. Places like Ross and TJMaxx often have strainers for $3-$8, just look in the cooking section. Dollar stores and asian markets are good too, I just like Ross because they have stainless steel ones.

My suggestion, as the mother plant is right there, would be to read up on air layering. I'm just into my second year but pulled one off my Miss Kim Dwarf Lilac last year and it is doing quite well and even bloomed this spring. I've just started layering that top left knob off this one for a little short fatter one for next year(hope). I had roots and removed/potted in 6-8 weeks last year I believe.

East way to get a head start on a larger trunk and the sawn off stump is screwed to a board attached to the box on mine.
