I was at Lowe's today picking up some pond baskets and I decided to take a look at their Mugo Pine selection.
They have 5 left and there was one that stuck out to me. It has a little bit of reverse taper but hopefully that can be fixed at a later date.
They were asking $52 which is insane this time of year.
I spoke to the manager at the garden center and she happily took 50% off. Score!!

Here is the tree how it brought it home.

I removed a bunch of dead branches and brown needles to get a better look at what's going on.
There were definitely a few options on styling so I muled it over for an hour or two and decided where I wanted to to go and also left a couple branches just in case.

I sawed off a little less than half and I was able to untangle the roots surprisingly easy. There were four giant roots running straight down which I was able to remove almost completely.

After I combed the roots out a tiny bit I put the tree into a 10" x 10" pond basket with a bonsai mix. Sadly I ran out while I was adding the last little bit so I topped it with Perlite and some of the trees original solid for now.

I tried removing about 50% of the foliage, especially to prevent future knuckles.
After some basic wiring I gave it a good shower and placed it under the massive yew in my yard where it will stay for a couple weeks before I move it onto a bench

The winter-goldening mugo pines are quite striking, especially as the needles just start to green back up in the spring.

Just a little update because I have absolutely nothing else to work on lol.
I slowly ramped up the feeding since I repotted and for the most part I left the tree alone. It's been slowly yellowing but I'm not sure if that's normal for a winter gold this time of year or not? Any input would be appreciated.
I also lost the needles on two branches. One directly in front and another behind it on the bottom right. I was going to eventually remove the bottom right one.
The front one I was eventually going to wire upwards but I think I can work with it being removed. I decided to jin it but at the moment it seems kinda distracting. I'll leave it on for now and wire it down to get more movement.
I can always shorten or remove it next year.

Anyway...the tree seems to be doing well at the moment. I'll just keep feeding until late fall and hope it survives the winter.

*Bonus little maple cutting I put in the basket for fun
