Hope I didn't get anyone too excited with the subject line. I don't have pictures yet!

I managed to find a Chinese elm with a nice trunk at a nursery, and for Christmas I got some good tools. I just need a few more essentials (wire particularly, and a root rake) and I'll begin work on my first bonsai! I'm excited and a little nervous.

I'll post pictures here when I make my first cuts. I hope to begin in the next few days here, after my wire and root rake arrive.

I purchased a Chinese Elm end of last September. Folks here shared thoughts for best practices keeping the tree thriving here in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The Chinese Elm bonsai tree is tough and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures. Here are some temperature guidelines I have seen [and shared]:

Chinese Elm bonsai trees have a period of winter dormancy to rest and rejuvenate. During this time, they can tolerate cold temperatures down to 15°F (-9°C) or even lower. However, it's important to protect it from severe frost or freezing temperatures for extended periods. The temperature is rarely 32°F or lower here in Eastern NC - It has been watered once a week this winter, and appears to be doing well staying in our sunroom.

The Chinese Elm bonsai tree can also tolerate heat, but extreme temperatures above 90°F (32°C) can be stressful. When the temperature consistently reaches the 90 - and above [which it did on occasion the past summer]. However, direct sunlight hits the tree for just a couple hours through the sunroom windows - it is in shade the majority of the day - and is doing well.

Have fun!
