Let’s Play A Game

These are the types of sizes you want to be collecting when going for larger stumps, I see a few of these guys in Croatia using these wenches to pull trees out, seems effective

even better if you find some with lower branches or subtrunks. or chop them in summer and give them a chance to send out new shoots.
look up Sandevbonsai on youtube.

These guys are serious

funnily enough, a lot of the guys ive been watching dont even use spades. I also have a root slayer bought a few years ago, with a view to collecting some day, but based on what ive been observing I probably wouldnt need it. you can get away with a pick axe, a hoe to uncover nebari, a folding handsaw, a bowsaw/reciprocating saw, loppers, secateurs.

I’m down to try for one of them most likely the hollow one .. I do have a wench .. I’m serious too.. I collected my big hornbeam w just a saw and hand loppers . But these are a whole other big.. I’m going around to other spots this weekend so I’ll have more to update

You gotta dare do it right?

I dare you to find something that is both easier to collect and has any hope of closing the wound, or it will always look stupid, even after your PT heals your ..... entire body!

If you can find those, you CAN find much better.

In the 6 hours to collect and the 6 months to watch it die, some genius will be out there collecting all the good stuff.

I would definitely look around for others, theres likely more in the area, if it was me i wouldnt bother with those two. sure people will say you can grow branches, but id select something that already has lower subrunks to hack back to. so look also for clumpy stumps, and only select ones with good root spreads.
watch Sandevbonsai to see what im talking about. and check out Walter's hornbeams!

see what Maros's trees look like when he first collects them, should give you a good indication of what to look for

Found more possibilities while also looking found awesome driftwood and a cool little Suiseki stone it reminds me of a turtle, which driving home I saw a snapping turtle crossing the street.. was a pretty fun morning to have some me time. 618748C0-188B-4A75-B90C-8D1D258420EF.jpeg390D60FA-6F33-478F-9477-F34F7CD29146.jpegEBEAC4CC-3412-4961-8146-BE9DFF03B99C.jpegE8E447BB-D26E-4970-B211-484A7B128A00.jpeg

Do you have access to equipment to dig and move the at least (probably more) 5 foot+ diameter root ball that you would need for those?
Hard to tell but using the leaves as scale they don't seem that big.

This is a tulip tree never seen one like this clumped up .. not gonna collect but is pretty cool. More trips lined up coming weeks ya’ll can laugh, , make fun of me , reacting more to someon else’s comment than the content on here..for wanting to collect big trees or whatever but I’m collecting and hustling, and not talking about peeing on bonsai. 18391F36-600D-4C03-B256-9B39CA913025.jpeg

This is a cool collected hedge juniper I spotted from another enthusiast on the weekend , told them I’d be interested in looking into acquiring it next spring depending on price and wasn’t able to look into it closely as I didn’t want to be rude.
